Amanda Shulman and Alex Kemp have had a busy few years in Philadelphia. Shulman debuted Her Place Supper Club in June 2021, and the pair opened Quebecois stunner My Loup in May 2023 with Kemp at the helm. Both restaurants landed on our Best New Restaurants lists in 2022 and 2024, respectively. They married in August 2023 and had their first child, Evie, in January. For the first time in a long time, they’re finding time to cook outside of work. And while their home kitchen is stocked with bottles and baby formula for now, they thoughtfully designed a space that will let them transition to solid foods and shared meals. From a workhorse sink made to tackle an unending stream of dishes to the beloved appliance Shulman also relies on at Her Place (hint: It’s got attachments), everything in their home kitchen is both functional and a joy to use.
Kemp is the self-proclaimed coffee obsessive of the house and he relies on the Breville to brew their morning caffeine. With customizable settings for dialing in shots, plus an integrated frother, water filter, and adjustable grinder with 16 settings, the machine lets him easily crank out coffee shop quality cortados or Americanos without having any real-life barista experience. “If you order something other than that, it’s going to be trouble,” he says.
A stand mixer is Shulman’s favorite tool at work and she’s got the same model at home. It’s great for mixing up brownies and blondies, but she also uses it to whip soft cheeses into spreadable dips, mash together herb-filled compound butters, and make all kinds of homemade noodles. “We’ve got all the attachments, the fettuccine one and the regular flat roller,” Shulman says, which makes cranking out batch after batch of pasta at home just as easy as it is at Her Place.
The duo has been meal prepping more than ever after expanding their family. Their go-tos: cooking big pots of beans and heaps of fluffy quinoa and poaching chicken breasts for salads and sandwiches. Shulman and Kemp use their enameled high-sided Cassadou for nearly everything. The big pot sits evenly on the smooth continuous grates of their Bosch Benchmark Gas Range, plus “it’s tall enough to make a small batch of soup but wide enough for a whole chicken,” Shulman says.
After Evie’s arrival, “we’re spending a lot of time in our sink,” Shulman says. The faucet features a pull-out head and sprayer, which come in handy for blasting everything and anything off pots and pans and getting into all the nooks and crannies of baby-size dishes, utensils, and bottles. The stainless-steel basin is durable and easy to sanitize, and at a full 12" deep, it’s got plenty of capacity to fit a load of dishes after family dinner too. Inset with thick rubber padding, the setup is designed to dull clinking and clanging noises from dropped utensils and pans (a dream for nap time).
